Southerns are always touted as being polite and charming. I certainly experienced a lot of polite people on vacation. Everyone I interacted with called me ma'am, or held the door for me. Perhaps it was just that I was submerged in the travel-centric nature of those areas, but I liked it all the same. Have you noticed the same thing when visiting or living in the South (of the U.S.)?
