One of my oldest friends and I have started a tradition of getting brunch (usually) monthly at somewhere between us. This month we chose a crepe place in Princeton and then opted to snag some tea and sit out in a park to catch up. Princeton is such a fun town with so many different food and drink options. Definitely no lack of places to check out! I'm pretty sure we have our next several brunches planned out just sticking to Princeton alone.

I was invited back to my old stomping grounds to speak to a few classes of students. Having not been back to the area in quite a few years, it felt really nice seeing familiar sights. Lots of good memories flooded me as I got closer. Some less good ones also came back. But thankfully, the visit went well, a difference (hopefully!) made, and perhaps I'll not spend quite so many years away next time.

The Starbucks in Brookfield Place is definitely one of the fanciest and biggest I've seen. The number of terminals where you could pick up your drink or food item are crazy! It's also a Starbucks Reserve, which I hadn't heard of before. Apparently it is more potent and pure tasting than the regular stuff. As a non-coffee drinker, I'll have to take the word of my colleagues who enjoyed it. I did appreciate the vibe of this Starbucks though!

After meeting a friend for brunch, I popped over to Starbucks to pick up a drink for my ride home. It was set right down the way from the Top Golf, which is a place I've not been to but heard a lot about. A driving range coupled with a bar, appropriate for all seasons. It definitely seems like it's a good time, and I'm hoping to be able to go up there some time. It's been probably over a decade, at least, since I've been to a driving range!

After brunch, I looked up a couple places to put cranes since I'm not normally in this area. However, after my trip, I realized I hadn't put more cranes in my little pouch that I bring around. Bummer! So I had to be strategic. I had planned on going to the Menlo Park Mall as I had never been there before, but I only had one crane left. That is when I passed by Starbucks and made a split second decision to make that my placement location for the last crane I had on me. And it certainly worked out because this crane was FOUND!

 

This crane was found by Mary's son, Aidan. "Good afternoon, while out with my kids today, my 11 year old found a Crane at our local Starbucks in Edison. NJ. He immediately came home to check out your website.. what a cool idea! Thanks so much for doing this. Here’s Aidan with the Crane he found!" In a subsequent email Mary said, "He was quite excited to find the Crane and your website, he’s excited just to be a part of it! Such a neat idea. Aidan loves learning about other places and he’s completely fascinated to see all the places the Crane has ended up." So happy to hear from a crane finder, especially one as jazzed as Aidan! Hopefully Aidan has a lot of wonderful trips in his future to all the fun places he's learned about!

It ended up being a bit colder in California than we had anticipated. Definitely could've used my gloves if I had brought a larger bag in with me. And maybe a light jacket to go over our hoodies. But the good thing about being in a park is that there are no lack of warm beverages and indoor shops to warm up in. That is just what we ended up doing when the sun started to set and the nip of the evening set in.

I checked out the Starbucks "You Are Here" Disneyland mug since I am a big fan of those really retro looking mugs they have. However, the espresso mug design was a lot nicer! If the line hadn't been so darn long, I definitely would've picked up one of those to add to my collection. The only problem with the mugs when you're collecting them is that you run out of room real quick!

The holidays are a wonderful time to get together with family, friends, and colleagues to let them know how much you appreciate them. I definitely made sure to do that with my colleagues this week, family in the coming weeks, and friends shortly thereafter. With a little time to spare before my ride home, I stopped in a Starbucks I often pass when leaving New York. Sometimes when I pass by places regularly, but I've never gone in, I often imagine what they look like. This Starbucks was MUCH larger than I had anticipated from the street. The building was one of those charming older sorts right across from a park. The sort of place that would be good to sit in on a cool fall morning on the weekend. The sort of park that is perfect at this time of year.

On of my favorite things about the fall in recent years is going to the Festival of San Gennaro. It is a street fair that happens in Little Italy each year with rides, food vendors, and trinket sellers. My favorite thing to get is the chocolate covered cannolis. The best cannoli shop, Ferrara's, had several stands, and I managed to score a delicious treat for the ride home.

Having not been to the outlets in a while, and needing to return something specifically to a store there, I took a nice walk around to see what new stores had popped in and see if I couldn't find a couple things that I had been looking into getting. Of course, when I saw they put in a Starbucks, I had to check it out. Can't turn up a good spot for a crane placement, that's for sure!

As it is impossible for me to pass by a new to me Starbucks for an opportunity to place a crane, I stopped in. One of the most difficult things being in this area was seeing numerous folks who were homeless and/or panhandling in the area. Although I've been in areas with both populations before, it seemed particularly hard in this area. I made sure to get a plain coffee on my way out to give to one of the guys I saw around. It's important to make sure to help others when possible and reasonable. Hopefully it was appreciated.

We popped on over to an escape room, Thriller City, which was my first time doing one of those. Escape rooms, for those not familiar, are rooms where you have to use a bunch of clues to find your way out of the room, or to a specific object. In our case, we were trying to solve clues to get to an ancient artifact. We were told the room only had a 1% solve rate, so I wasn't terribly bummed when we did not succeed. But we were 3 numbers out of 5 away from the object itself. Just a little bit more time! I really would like to do another escape room and see if a different group of friends could escape. Definitely a fun activity for a cold January day!

I managed to get out of a work activity a bit early and decided to treat myself to a cool drink after a long morning. Having been in a location I hadn't been to before, I searched out somewhere to place a crane and wound up at a trusty Starbucks! I'll be down in the area again in the not too distant future, so I'll try to find another place I've not been to!

On my way home from Virginia, I stopped by for a quick visit with a friend who lives in the area. Always nice to catch up with friends whenever possible! It was a nice visit as I got to eat a late lunch at a delicious place I hadn't been to but heard of before. I also was a good way to break up a lengthy drive.

I was pretty impressed by how large an area Fredericksburg encompassed, and how many Starbucks I managed to hit that were technically considered to be still in the town itself. Heck, I even managed to pass one by as I was thinking it would probably look like I was an addict! Fredericksburg seems to have anything that you could want and then some in a town. I wouldn't necessarily call is a prodigious town, but I was pretty impressed by its size.

The area had a very college-y feel as I drove through a portion of the campus for the College of William and Mary. I had a friend or two growing up that went there, but I never knew much about it other than it was further into Virginia than I had ever been. I wish I had a bit more time down there during the daylight hours to do a bit more exploring than I had managed to do! I bet the campus is quite lovely as most things in Fredericksburg manage to be!

I requested to visit the newly opened FBI Experience at the Headquarters building in Washington, D.C. It is a museum quality exhibit open to the public on what it is like working for the FBI, the positions available, as well as the process to get from training into an office. It was really neat to see the inner workings of the FBI. They did a really great job with the different rooms as well as the information provided. They talked about some of the larger public cases as well as had a variety of videos to watch!

As most short jaunts, I tried to fit the most into my quick stint in the capitol. I did a fair bit of walking, trekked through museums, visited shops, ate as much food as I could, and was out in less than 8 hours. It definitely was a good time and reminds me how much I enjoy Washington, DC. It's even significantly more drive-able than New York, with much cheaper parking to boot. It's not too far away, but it's always just far enough away that I don't ever think about choosing it as a quick weekend away. Will have to remedy that in the future to see more of the stuff I missed!
