It's almost a year to the day since I donated 11 inches of hair to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program. A number of my friends had donated their hair to different organizations and, in recent years, have had very long hair. I figured why not. I went to a local hair salon and told them what I was doing: donating my hair. And what did they do besides cut my hair? They donated the cut to me, free of charge. Definitely wasn't expecting that! My hair was a lot shorter than I was used to but remembering why I cut it made any bad hair days (and you best believe there were some!) well worth it. A few weeks later, I got a wonderful letter from Pantene in the mail thanking me for me donation. I would do it again right now if my hair was long enough.

Have you ever donated anything big or small?

Please note: I am in no way affiliated with or promoting any Pantene products. I just had a really great experience while donating and wanted to share it.

  1. I did the Pantene Great Lengths (or Beautiful Lengths) program, too! I did it about two years ago. It was amazing for me, and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had the patience to grow my hair again. I also donated a lot of my hair to the Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup this past spring, when they were collecting hair for that (it was used to absorb the oil, I think?) I love having short hair again.

My daughter is growing her beautiful hair out and I'm hoping she might like to donate it someday. I don't know if she's "there" yet- she's very attached to her hair and I don't think she understands exactly why donating it might be a good thing to do (she's only five, but we're working on different concepts of kindness and compassion).

  2. @Chel I'm glad to hear you had a good experience with it as well. I think I still have another year or two before my hair reaches long enough where I can donate that much again. I never heard about that Gulf Oil Spill clean up thing. Pretty neat idea.

It's definitely a lot harder for young children to understand it. This past year I volunteered with my local Relay for Life and a number of elementary school aged girls (and a couple boys!) donated their hair. I think the biggest factor there was that they had a classmate who was in remission but had lost all her hair. So they could see the effects it had on her. It was really touching to hear about it. :)

  3. I've donated everything from hours and hours of my time to little chunks of money here and there...it's been a while though. Oops :-/
