Since we've been to Phoenix a number of times, we were looking to visit somewhere we hadn't been. The OdeSEA Aquarium was under construction the last time that we were in the area. They really did such a nice job with the area as well as the aquarium itself. We saw so many wonderful sea creatures and enjoyed the treat of seeing a baby sloth! I really appreciated having a variety of wonderfully informative employees throughout the venue itself for any questions, or to provide random bits of knowledge about the animals.

While I headed into the Barnes & Noble, I saw a charity sitting outside of the store collecting donations. When it includes the most adorable dogs, I am extremely happy to support it! Many times during the holiday season, charities often are looking for money to assist those less fortunate. It's always important to help in whatever ways you can, even if you can't spare the money. There are always ways to support via donations of things you don't use, or your time.

I decided to take a little poke around to see what Talking Stick had to offer. Down a hallway and around a corner, we found the Cultural Center, which had a number of lovely art pieces there. It was just a little alcove before heading into the hotel portion of the resort but it definitely had some interesting pieces to look at while we waited for the other members of our party to finish up. Definitely worth a look around if you happen to be visiting!

After hitting up the Butterfly Wonderland, we decided to stop in to the Talking Stick Casino to see what they had going on. After having gone to Las Vegas just a few months prior, it was quite a shocking comparison. However, it looked like it was well attended by a number of steadfast locals who were enjoying their time indoors. The property looked pretty nice and it had a lovely convention center attached.

We decided to take a trip to the Butterfly Wonderland as a fun thing to do that we hadn't done before. I think I was the only one who absolutely adored the butterflies. I took so many pictures and even had one land on me, which I hear is good luck. There were a couple other exhibit areas, but it was not a large place. They also have an attached attraction that is a mirror maze and then a laser maze. Both were fun but the mirror maze was very disorienting to me having never been in one before. I am looking forward to my next trip back to Arizona as there was an aquarium being built right next door that I definitely will want to visit!

The painted desert was pretty neat looking. However, my favorite portion of this trip was the Blue Mesa. It looked downright other-worldly. The layers of rock colors of this southwestern badlands were due in part because of the environment of the location many years in the past. Did you know that Arizona (or at least that part of it) used to be environmentally similar to what the Amazon is like today? It's hard to imagine when you see how flat it is. The Blue Mesa are a number of hills that show the differences of the layers of soil during a number of historic times. This lead to a really neat stratification of rock. It's hard to describe but extremely awesome.

We decided to stop here on a whim as we had a bit of time to kill and it was along the way. We didn't really know too much about it, but this stop easily falls in my top 3 favorite places of the trip. The views were outstanding. There were a number of places to see petroglyphs on the nearby rocks along with signs indicating what they likely meant.

This crane was found by a woman moving states at the time she found the crane. She didn't indicate that I could use her email that she sent along to me, but I wanted to take a moment to wish her well in her move!

We made sure to stop at the Wigwam motel for the night while on our trip. How many other places can you stay in a historic wigwam? Not many I'd venture to guess. It was definitely quite the experience. The motel is located very close to the railway that goes across the state. I had only heard about the long trains with dozens of cars, but had never seen them. I definitely heard them throughout the night, and saw them the next day. One train, I counted, had over 100 cars attached to it! It definitely felt very middle America to me.

There weren't too many eateries in Holbrook, but this one definitely seemed the most frequented of our trip. There was a birthday party taking place, and quite a number of people were meeting up with friends for a Mexican Friday night meal. While it wasn't the best Mexican food on our trip, we certainly were entertained by the people watching and the conversations we overheard.

Our next stop was the Montezuma Castle National Monument. I had heard about that several years back on my first trip to the Grand Canyon. It seemed right up my alley, but I never managed to go. So when we had the opportunity, I definitely wanted to take it. Although we couldn't traipse around this one as it was high and literally built into the side of a rock formation, it was still a pretty neat site. It gave us a bit more history of the Native American's who made this land their home.

Definitely not one to turn down a placement, I might have specifically tried to seek out this Starbucks. I actually had been in the area once before a number of years ago going to the Out of Africa animal park. We actually passed by it on the way to the Starbucks. The thing I remember most about that animal park was the safari ride where the giraffe ate a carrot or orange pepper out of out tour guides teeth. Well, that and the big cats acting quite playful when diving into large pools after toys and meat!

 Apparently it's not a true trip until you've witnessed something you've never seen before. One of those things was definitely a store devoted to just glitter. I've definitely never seen so many types and varieties of glitter. If you're a glitter fan, this is definitely the store for you. My travel companion made a purchase for the annual Christmas card. While I definitely just buy store bought, those cards will be wonderfully glittered!

We decided to visit  a couple of local national monuments, including Tuzigoot. Native American's lived in the area for many hundreds of years before moving out of the area. They left behind many of their artifacts as well as their impressive stone structures. The site we visited still had a pretty substantial amount of the dwelling left to the point where we could go up on to the roof of it and see the large swath of land they called their home. It was quite impressive, and I am able to understand why they chose that location.

The Arabella Hotel is located centrally in Sedona. We were able to see all the wonderful red rocks at sunset from the restaurant we walked to. Sedona is such a lovely town and known for its rd rock formations. Had the winds been more favorable, we would've taken a hot air balloon ride above them. It wasn't meant to be, but we still got to poke around the lovely town and have a leisurely breakfast.

After a slight mishap, our road trip took us unexpectedly to the Flagstaff Airport. I think it is the smallest airport I've ever been to. We were basically able to get into everywhere except the extremely tiny terminal. I hadn't even realized that Flagstaff had an airport. Tiny and adorable!

This was far and away, for me, one of the highlights of the trip Antelope Canyon is a recessed canyon in what looks to be the middle of a field. After climbing down several ladders, you're in the most gorgeous canyon. It was carved out by a flood and often fills quite substantially during the monsoons Arizona occasionally gets. Thankfully we had a gorgeous day and were able to get lots of AMAZING photos. Intel from people in the know say that Lower Antelope Canyon is more visually stunning than upper. Having only visited the one, I cannot say for sure. But I certainly recommend going if you're ever even remotely in the area!

This is the location where I learned that sometimes, Starbucks' might be located in a food store. They don't have any of those in New Jersey, so I was surprised to get into the plaza where I thought there would be a stand alone Starbucks, only to find it in a food store. No worries! Still a good location to release a crane!

Page is definitely quite a tiny town. We were only there for less than a day, so we might not have seen all that it offered. As it is so close to the Utah border, a lot of people likely stay here to be a bit more cost effective with their trip to Lake Powell. I definitely want to take a trip to Lake Powell and rent a houseboat up there at some point in time. It looks like it would be a lot of fun!

We popped into the lookout shop on our way back to the car, hoping to pop out on to the lookout. Sadly, it was too close to closing and they had closed the viewing point. We had a bit of a poke around the shop and then decided to call it a night, heading to Page through lots of windy and dark roads for a bit more than 3 hours. It gets real dark and lonely in northern Arizona at night, that's for sure!

We finally got to the Grand Canyon in the late afternoon after heading out from the Hoover Dam. As I had visited the Grand Canyon, in this same spot, I had already seen a lot of the vistas. But it is still gorgeous no matter how many times you see it. I hadn't been there at sunset, so we got the real treat of watching the sky change colors over the Grand Canyon.
