I hadn't heard of this brewing company until right before one of my friends suggested we check it out. They give out free brewery tours on the weekends (I believe? If you're interested, you might want to check before going.) Having only ever been on distillery tours, a brewery tour sounded like a nice addition. I'm always game to learn a few new things, and I certainly did. If you're local and looking for a little something different to do, I'd recommend popping over!

The warmest day of the trip at over 80 degrees, we decided to do some shopping in one of the lovely areas of Scottsdale. It made me totally long for warm weather at home. We decided to check out Joe's as it was featured on the TV show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. We enjoyed our burgers and hot dogs under the shade of some sort of large tree. It was pretty nice when it was light out. We followed the rest of this holiday evening buying and setting off some fireworks. Unlike where we live, buying fireworks in a grocery store parking lot is legal as well as setting off said fireworks on private properties. We also took advantage on New Year's Day of the holiday and set them off that night too!

We were out enjoying the warmth of the preserve I mentioned in Crane 360 when I realized that the library bordered the preserve. So I absolutely had to at least walk around it. Since we were with a group of people, I just got to see the outside and the front area. But that was nice enough. Plus it was in the 70s temperature wise outside, so we definitely wanted to milk it for all it was worth!

Over the holiday, a handheld GPS was acquired so we decided to go geocaching with a couple friends in the area. For those unfamiliar with geocaching, it's kind of like an adult treasure hunt. You use coordinates to find hidden caches, which can be little trinkets with a pad of paper to record when you visited, or just a pad. You never really know what you're going to find so it's always a surprise. We ended up finding 4 caches in the preserve and is a nice walk even if you're not into that sort of thing.

This crane was found by Val on 12.31.11. She emailed me today to let me know she found it while on a walk with her son and his friend. She says she plans on bringing it with her to Palm Springs when she heads out there shortly!

On TV there is a show called Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. Guy goes around and finds the best of the little places around the U.S. So Chino Bandido's was one of the ones he featured on the TV show. They serve a bunch of different foods together (Chinese & Mexican, mostly). It's apparently a favorite where I'm staying, so we popped over there. Let me just say how astonished I was! I had a Chinese BBQ Pork quesadilla with pork fried rice, and it was amazing! I was a bit hesitant but if you're in the area, it's well worth a check out.

I like having normal seat companions when on flights. While I've certainly not done a TON of flying, I have certainly met my fair share of "special" people. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't check the credibility of at least one story from a fellow flightmate after landing. Flying, and sometimes long public transport in general, is one of those things where you feel like you can share your life story with someone (or having someone share with you as is my case) but not actually know the name of the other person. I'm a fan of enjoying big, impressive churches. And this one was both. I ended up going in at the tail end of one of the daily masses, which apparently people can come and go as they please during. But after the mass was over, I took a little walk around the perimeter and enjoyed some of the architecture and artwork. It was very similar to some of the astounding ones I saw in Europe. I really enjoy when local libraries display work from local artists. It gives the library a very close-knit feel, supporting the local artists. Despite living 15 minutes away from Bay Head for over 2.5 years, I don't think I ever went there. My old childhood hair-cutter used to live there. I interpreted Mother Teresa's words to fit my project. The person that finds a crane is potentially nearest to me distance wise. It may be the next person in line at the ATM, another person perusing the library, someone traveling behind me in a museum. Don't worry about the reach of the project but the depth of it. The first picture is a general picture of one of the lighthouse towers of the Twin Lights. One of the towers is actually octagonal while the other is square. In all the times I can remember, only the octagonal one has been open to go up in. But it must've been my lucky day as the square one was open this time. So I basically had to go up and poke around a bit. While it was a bit nippy on the ground with the overcast, it was downright chilly up at the top of the lighthouse. Between that and it closing in a few short minutes, I didn't get to spend too much time poking around. But being another free/educational/fun activity, I couldn't say no!

In my intended upbeat fashion, I made good natured small talk with some of the other patrons visiting the house. We bonded about the lovely architectural pieces, the size of the rooms, and how wonderful of a view they had when people actually lived in them. Ignoring the fact that everyone was at least three times my age (perhaps a slight exaggeration), I was able to enjoy the Historical House in the absence of dragging anyone along on this adventure. I like imagining what places were like in their hayday, like the ancient historic ruins of many European countries I've been to. Do you guys ever wonder what a place was like some time in the past?

Although it's super small, the skyline in this picture is actually New York City. The Empire State Building is completely visible and kind of stands out. While it takes nearly 1.5 hours to get into New York City by train, as the crow flies, it's pretty quick. There's a ferry (or several) that go from that area into New York City, but I hear it takes about the same time. Last time I was standing at this point, I was extremely doubtful you could see the skyline from that spot. What difference a less hazy and polluted day can make! As you can see, it doesn't take much to excite me.

As I mentioned earlier, I remember going to a lighthouse with my Grandparents when I was younger. We did a lot of fun little activities since they lived about 20 minutes from where I did. We go to parks, the circus, and sometimes just for drives to see all the big houses by the ocean. (And believe you me, there is no shortage of large house along the ocean between Sandy Hook and where they lived.) They helped me sell girl scout cookies to all their neighbors when I was little (a neighborhood I subsequently moved into, though most of the people living there had moved on.) For as close as I've lived to Sandy Hook, I rarely spent much time there in the past. I remember going there for a class trip in 5th grade (a really fun class trip aside from thinking that our room in a barrack was ridiculously haunted...) I remember going to the lighthouses with my Grandparents, who loved everything lighthouse related. But I cannot recall any previous times (aside from my visit there a little over a year ago), despite how absolutely cool it is. Having house a fort in the past (think World War era), it is filled with nooks and crannies housing armory bits and battery bobs. Old missile launchers still stand as well as perches and lookout towers. For someone that likes exploring old things, this is quite the gold mine. Not to mention that after Labor Day, parking is free as well as the tours and exhibits. Educational, fun, and free? Sign me up!

This was not actually on the to-do list that I planned prior to going on vacation. It was only when I realized I didn't need to spend the morning of the 5th in Savannah to finish up everything that I had wanted to do that lead me to look on the way at something else to possibly do or see prior to my needing to catch a flight home. And that's when I found Brookgreen Gardens. Absolutely amazing! Between all the different flower gardens and sculpture locations, there was a ton to see and do. They also have a zoo of sorts to wander through. And if that wasn't enough, they had a whole section depicting the area as it was when it was a rice farm. I think I took nearly as many pictures here as I did in each of the cities I visited. Additionally, every single employee there was absolutely wonderful. Most of them gave me little tidbits of information that made for a perfect visit. If I ever manage to get back down to the area in December, I am definitely going to go check out their Night of a Thousand Candles. I was told that there are floating candles in the ponds and displays including candles as well as carolers strolling the paths. It sounds absolutely magical,and I'm a bit sad that I have no relatives living in the area so I could head over there more often! This may have been one of my favorite things on the trip and has reaffirmed that sometimes I need to stop planning everything to such an extreme and just to go with the flow.

What a hidden gem! I just figured I would stop to use the restrooms, pick up whatever information they had, and head out in 15 minutes. But it was a bit more than that. The Sewee Visitor's Center actually had exhibits, trails (which were a bit too hot for me to walk), and even a wolf! I real live one! One of the guys wandering around turned out to be the... I'm not even sure what term he used, but he cared for the wolf. This guy directed me to where to go to find that lovely guy. I was pleasantly surprised to find when I left that I spent the better part of an hour wandering around the place.

As touted by a number of local people I asked, the Owens-Thomas House was one of the more interesting and unique houses out there. There were tons of little interesting bits in the house including the makers desire for symmetry, which leads to phantom doors that lead nowhere and windows in ridiculous places. One of my favorite things are the matching china closets built into the corners with rounded doors. It was a pretty cool house. Due to an anti-photo personnel member following the tour like a hawk, I left the crane in the slave quarters/carriage house. Definitely a must see house if you're into that sort of thing.

It seems like those sorts of porches were the ones that people in the old days were invited if they were someone import to the hosts. Between that and the higher floors, people certainly knew how to party. I can just imagine the people of the past, decked out in their party outfits, milling around on those porches in the cooler nights of spring and fall. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House is a very popular restaurant in Savannah where you sit at a large table seating 10 and eat together boarding house style (where there is bowls of stuff passed around). Since the line was quite long, I spent most of my hour long wait talking to the nice ladies ahead of me in line. They were about ready to adopt me by the time we got up to the front of the line but as a single person, I was bumped up to a different table. They were also visiting Hilton Head and just spending the day in Savannah. I wish I had been able to sit with them, but instead I sat with a group from Ohio and one from the same area I went to for my undergraduate university degree. Small world.

I had a lovely view of Savannah from the back of the hotel, facing out onto Madison Square. One of the cool things about Savannah is the number of squares, or small parks, that dot the city. There are over 20 squares making the city look pretty green when viewed from up high. I think the squares were my favorite part of the city. On my first night visiting, I got a meal to-go and spent the night eating in Chippewa Square (or where the opening scene from the movie Forest Gump was shot). I think I drove or walked through the majority of the squares, which was a real treat.

The lady that blindsided me was casing the candy displays for some chocolate-y goodness (and that stores wares were particularly good) and walked right into me while I was taking the photo. I was so stunned that she neither apologized nor even seem to realize that she ran into me that I promptly left. Hopefully that lady really enjoyed the candy she ended up buying.

In one of those perfect crane placing moments, remarkable ended up at Paula Deen's restaurant, The Lady & Sons. The food, well you guessed it, was remarkable. Everything from the biscuits to the sweet tea to the chicken pot pie was amazing. I even loved the flash fried collards, and I don't even like collards. I also listened to my waiter talk to another table about how the restaurant runs as well as their seating capacity, which was really interesting. The icing on the cake? Said waiter gave me a cup of sweet tea for the road. Pretty key on (yet another) sweltering day. If I lived in Savannah, I'd be a regular there, so it might be a good thing for my waist-line that I'm not!

There were tons of little artist shops in the Market Center portion of Savannah. If I had tons and tons of money, I'd certainly know where to spend it all. Granted I would've never been able to put it all in my one checked luggage piece, but that is totally besides the point. I did end up getting a couple smaller things from a place down by the river but I really wanted to pick up a couple things here.

When it comes to going on a vacation by yourself, you certainly need to be unabashed. Several people during the trip were surprised to hear I had gone on my own but I didn't really think about it much. I planned a little trip, got to do all the things I wanted to do, and kept busy for the most part. I'm glad that I was able to get to go see the places I did and chat with some of the interesting people I did.

If this crane isn't the poster 'child' for not making my cranes late at night the night before I am slated to fly out, I don't know what is. I'm obviously not too mindful of my spelling late at night.

Prior to placing this crane, I went to Bonaventure Cemetery, although I wasn't quite sure why I had placed it on my list of places to go. It was a cool cemetery in terms of old markers and different ones (my favorite being a piano shaped one). It wasn't too far from Wormsloe Plantation so swinging by on my way back to my hotel was no big deal. Another scorching day made a Lemonade Iced Tea look all the better.

I wish I had something insightful to say about this location but it was just one of those release and run sorts of cranes. The inside of the coffee place looked pretty pretty inviting with a wooden bar but definitely hard to take a picture of it while trying to be inconspicuous. I was pretty impressed with the model sailboat at the end of the bar. No idea what the significance of it was, but I certainly approve.

The quintessential southern dirt road covered by moss dripping trees? It must've been based off Wormsloe because it was a completely accurate depiction. If I had been shooting with a film camera, I would've blown through a full 2 rolls with the number of pictures I took. It was exactly what I was looking for during my trip to the south and I couldn't be happier to have captured it. I tried getting a picture of my crane with the trees but the sunlight kept washing everything out. But a quick google search of pictures will give you a good idea of what I saw. It's an absolute MUST DO if you are spending any time in Savannah and you have access to a car.

Driving down I-95 (the major roadway that spans the eastern coast of the United States) has a whole different feel down there. There's no tolls, fewer lanes and people travel considerably slower. The road meanders more and has significantly more scenic portions in my experience. These things made the drive a bit more enjoyable than it might've been otherwise.

When I released this crane, I was feeling the thrill of my first ghost related "tour". It was only a tour of an old jailhouse, and it was also during daylight since I was vacationing on my own. But still, thrilling. While the tour wasn't actually a thrill, it was still pretty interesting to learn some of the history behind the jail and think about all the different sorts of people that looked out the bars I did.

This might have been one of my favorite spots on vacation. There is this lovely little pier going out into the river, and on that pier are not only benches but swings. It took me three passes to get a swing, but I finally scored one! And it was the most glorious swing I ever had, especially after a long day of walking.

What better than visiting an old dungeon leads you to remember that no one is invincible? That said, it was pretty interesting to explore the old bits and see the worn stones where prisoners spent their time. We also got to hear some stories of people that were held captive there, which was also pretty cool. Not to mention the building was also the old post office at one time. How's that for multi-tasking?!
